BASE jump
Building Antenna Span Earth
A BASE jump consists of making a jump from a natural or artificial obstacle. The BASE is a short for the basic types of departure :
| B uilding : | jump from a building or skyscraper |
| A ntenna : | jump from an antenna or tower |
| S pan : | jump from a bridge arch or deck |
| E arth : | jump from a cliff |
The closeness of the obstacles and the lack of air support demand precision and adjusted equipment in order to practice this disipline.
Base jumping is mostly practised individually or in small groups of initiates. The only mass event is Bridge Day organised from a high Bridge in the U.S.A.
Base jumping is not aknowledged as a federal discipline in France. The first official competition (aknowledged by the IPBC) took place in March 98 from a 400 feet high cliff in Utah, U.S.A. The judging was based on two things : Preciseness of the opening and preciseness at landing.
